Lionel Magazine Digital Archive Comments

The reviews are starting to come in! See what your fellow Lionel enthusiasts have to say about The Lionel Magazine Digital Archive 1930 - 1936 and the Model Builder Digital Archive 1937 - 1949:

John,

I just tried out my new The Lionel Magazine Digital Archive. You have another winner. Thank you for keeping these great old sources of information alive and available to all. Many would never have access to literature such as this or even know it exists without your fine products.

I picked up a copy of John's "The Lionel Magazine: 1930 - 1936" at the York OGR booth today. I have just had a few minutes with it (I hope to have a more comprehensive review soon -- but if someone beats me to it, that's OK! )....

For anyone interested in this magazine presented in prime condition, this is the CD-Rom for him (or her). It has searchable contents, really easy navigation/easy-to-learn navigation (indicating considerable planning effort), printable pages and compatible with both Mac and Windows. The CD-Rom also contains a "Bonus Section" including the Lionel Engineers Club invitation, examples of mailing envelopes, recruiting forms, issue variations, a photo of the club pin as well as various advertising for the Lionel Engineers Club.

A winner!

I am a strong believer in this kind of archiving of our hobby's history. Not only is the history interesting to us now, but it will continue to be used by future generations in this digital format.

Way to go, John & company!!

Good Morning John,

I have had a few days now to review this latest offering from HSL and I want to give you my comments.

The technical quality of your product is outstanding. You have done a first class job on this project.

I love the fact that I can view the articles in my Firefox Browser and use all the browser capabilities to magnify and print out some of the articles.

The on screen article readability is first rate due to the high resolution and high quality of the scanning of the paper copies.

I use a 32 inch HDTV at 1920 by 1080 resolution as my monitor and the on screen read-a-bility is very comfortable due to the text magnification the browser allows.

The content of the magazines is very enjoyable and illuminating. Your introductory comments on the context of what I am reading adds to the enjoyment of the magazine issues.

Being born in the mid 1940s I have no recollection of ever seeing a paper copy of The Lionel Magazine nor of the Uncle Don radio show you mentioned so it is all new and fresh to me.

Finally the Lionel ads of the early thirties are eye opening as to their pricing. While looking back almost 80 years now the prices seem ridiculously cheap in reality they were very, very expensive for a toy at that time. My father made $10 per week as a skilled laborer in 1932 and was the breadwinner for his whole family of five as his father has been laid off from yet another closed factory. The Lionel ad from the Summer issue of 1930 shows a nice train set for $12.75. That was a week's wages! For a toy! What average wage earner spends a weeks wages on a toy these days?

Please email me as new products become available from HSL. I am sure I will be a continue to be an enthusiastic customer.

Thanks again,

Ernest Burkhardt, New Jersey

Hi John,

I received the TLMDA and it is fantastic! I have spent hours reading and re-reading some of the most interesting train material, I have ever seen.

John,

I have finally been able to get back on the computer after receiving your latest issue of The Model Builder (Volume Two of The Lionel Magazine Archive). The reason for being off the computer in the first place was you. I received the disk on Tuesday 6 July 2010 and missed dinner because I was so fascinated with reading all the issues of The Model Builder. I finally stopped around 2300 that night. I am back on the computer and going strong trying to finish my first pass through.

Here are my comments about this disk. John, you have scored yet another home run and the ball went right out of the park. The clarity of every page is suburb. The disk use is the easiest you could have made it by far. I commend you on your patience and tenacity in putting out a quality product. You have put a very important part of model railroading into the hands of all of us. There is really no way to thank you for all that you have done with all your series. I and every other model railroader owes you a heartfelt thanks for all your dedication to all of your works. I do not have to say keep up the good work as your nature is to bring perfection to all of what you set out to do. Your are quite a person John to say the least. I cannot wait to get Volume three when you can get it mailed out.

John,

The < Model Builder > CDs are superb. It's hard to believe that print and pictures that old could be reproduced in such quality; money well spent; and they have brought back many memories.
